Hollywood has a habit of circling back to the Resident Evil franchise like a shark that refuses to stop swimming. Another reboot is reportedly in the works, and while the games have given us plenty of material, the well of live-action adaptations is starting to feel tapped out. Before we sit through another Raccoon City disaster, there are dozens of other video game worlds that could deliver something fresh, exciting, and genuinely cinematic.
First on the list is Chrono Trigger. A time-traveling RPG with a tight cast and a story that spans from the age of dinosaurs to the apocalypse. It has emotional weight, memorable villains, and a score that practically writes its own screenplay. Then there is Bloodborne. Imagine a gothic horror film directed by someone like Robert Eggers. Victorian architecture, cosmic nightmares, and a protagonist who slowly loses their mind. It would be terrifying in the best way.
For something lighter, Katamari Damacy could be a surreal comedy about a tiny prince rolling up everything on Earth into a giant ball. It sounds ridiculous because it is, but that is exactly why it would stand out. On the action side, Metal Gear Solid still feels like a missed opportunity. A stealth thriller about nuclear deterrence, genetic memory, and a guy who talks to a dead colonel through a codec. It is weird, smart, and deeply cinematic.
Other strong candidates include Okami, which could be a stunning animated film in the style of Studio Ghibli. The Legend of Zelda has been teased for years, but a proper live-action take on Breath of the Wild could finally capture that sense of exploration and melancholy. And do not forget Dead Space. A sci-fi horror movie set on a derelict spaceship with necromorphs and zero gravity. It is basically Alien meets Event Horizon, and it deserves a real budget.
The list goes on. From Shadow of the Colossus to Psychonauts, from Disco Elysium to Hades. These games have rich stories, unique art styles, and built-in fanbases. Hollywood does not need to keep remaking Resident Evil. It just needs to look at what is already on the shelf.
