5 Best Video Games Like Horizon Zero Dawn

"Horizon Zero Dawn" redefined the action RPG landscape with its blend of robotic wildlife, a post-apocalyptic world reclaimed by nature, and a strong, resourceful protagonist. Finding a game that matches that exact mix of crafting, stealth, and ancient mystery is no small task. However, these five titles come remarkably close to delivering that same sense of discovery and tactical combat.

First on the list is "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." While it trades machine dinosaurs for fantasy creatures, the core loop of climbing any surface, gliding across vast landscapes, and solving environmental puzzles feels very familiar. The world is dense with secrets, and the freedom to approach any encounter from any angle mirrors Aloy's hunting style.

For those who loved the stealth and bow combat, "Tomb Raider" (the 2013 reboot and its sequels) is a direct parallel. Lara Croft is another survivalist who uses a bow, scavenges for resources, and explores ancient ruins that hold the key to a larger catastrophe. The focus on vertical traversal and tense, one-shot kills against human enemies scratches the same itch.

If the robotic creatures were your favorite part, look at "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain." It features a massive open world where you can mark enemies, use a variety of gadgets, and plan elaborate takedowns. While the setting is military rather than tribal, the satisfaction of outsmarting a heavily armed outpost with patience and precision is identical.

"Assassin's Creed Origins" offers a sprawling ancient Egyptian world filled with wildlife, tombs, and a story about a protector. The bow combat is excellent, and the ability to tame animals and use a hidden blade provides a different but complementary power fantasy. The historical mystery and the vast, beautiful map are a strong match.

Finally, "Ghost of Tsushima" delivers a stunning open world with a focus on honor, stealth, and precise swordplay. While it lacks ranged combat as a primary tool, the wind as a navigation system, the side quests that build character, and the beautiful, overgrown landscapes all echo the feeling of exploring a world that has moved on without you. Each of these games offers a different piece of what made Horizon special.
