5 Retro Video Games That Changed Multiplayer Forever

Multiplayer gaming did not start with online lobbies and voice chat. Long before the internet connected players across continents, local split-screens and link cables turned living rooms into battlegrounds. These five retro classics laid the groundwork for the social experiences we take for granted today.

First is "GoldenEye 007" on the Nintendo 64. It took the first-person shooter and made it a couch co-op staple. The four-player deathmatch, with its oddball rules like "You Only Live Twice" and the iconic proximity mines, turned friends into bitter rivals. It proved that console shooters could be just as competitive as their PC counterparts.

Next, "Halo: Combat Evolved" for the original Xbox. While not ancient, its system link feature allowed two consoles to connect for 16-player matches. This bridged the gap between local and network play, setting the standard for console online services that followed.

"Super Smash Bros." on the Nintendo 64 deserves mention. It threw out the health bar and introduced a chaotic, four-player free-for-all. Its simple controls and item drops made it accessible to non-gamers, creating a party game that is still a tournament mainstay.

"Quake" on PC was a pioneer. It was one of the first games to offer smooth, real-time 3D multiplayer over the internet. Its deathmatch mode and modding community gave birth to esports and the clan culture that dominates competitive gaming today.

Finally, "Mario Kart 64" refined the racing genre. Its four-player split-screen and rubber-band AI kept races close and tense. The blue shell became a legend, ensuring that no lead was safe and that every player had a chance to win until the final lap.

These five titles did not just offer multiplayer. They changed how we play together, turning solitary screens into shared memories.
