A modern-day classic gets a (partially) welcome upgrade in ‘Resynced’

The remake of "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag" arrives not as a full-blown reimagining, but as a careful restoration. Titled "Resynced," this version polishes the 2013 classic without trying to reinvent the wheel. For those who have never sailed the Caribbean as Edward Kenway, this is the definitive way to experience one of the franchise's high points. For returning players, the question is whether the upgrades justify another voyage.

The visual overhaul is the most immediate change. Lighting is warmer, water physics are more convincing, and character models have sharper edges. The sprawling islands of Nassau and Havana feel denser, with foliage that actually sways in the wind rather than clipping through buildings. The draw distance has been extended significantly, making ship-to-ship combat feel less like a pop-in surprise and more like a tactical engagement.

But "Resynced" is not without its compromises. The core gameplay loop remains untouched, which is both a blessing and a curse. The tailing missions and tedious eavesdropping sequences still exist, dragging down the otherwise excellent pacing. The naval combat, however, remains a joy. Manning the Jackdaw, firing broadsides, and boarding enemy vessels feels as thrilling as it did a decade ago.

The biggest addition is a quality-of-life update for the modern era. Fast travel is more accessible, and the infamous "follow the ship" missions have been shortened. The soundtrack has been re-recorded with a live orchestra, giving shanties a richer, more immersive sound.

Is "Resynced" a necessary purchase? For newcomers, absolutely. For veterans, it is a respectful tribute. It does not fix everything, but it gives a phenomenal game the polish it deserves. If you have been craving the open sea, this is your excuse to set sail again.
