Epic Games has rolled out a significant update for Unreal Engine 5, specifically targeting performance gains on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. The company claims the new lighting and rendering optimizations allow the engine to run "twice as fast" on the hybrid console compared to previous builds. This is a major leap for developers looking to bring high-fidelity titles to Nintendo's platform without sacrificing frame rates or visual quality.
The update focuses heavily on improving the engine's dynamic global illumination and shadow systems, which are traditionally resource-intensive. By reworking how these calculations are handled on the Switch 2's custom chipset, Epic has managed to cut down on processing overhead. Early benchmarks suggest that scenes which previously struggled to maintain 30 frames per second can now hit a stable 60 frames per second with comparable visual settings.
For players, this means that future Unreal Engine 5 games on the Switch 2 could look closer to their PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X counterparts, albeit at lower resolutions or with adjusted draw distances. Developers have already begun testing the update, with several third-party studios reporting smoother workflows and fewer compromises needed to hit performance targets. While Epic has not disclosed exact technical specifications, the update is being rolled out to all licensed developers immediately. The move positions the Switch 2 as a more viable platform for graphically ambitious projects, potentially narrowing the gap between portable and home console gaming.
