Honoring Human-Crafted Music in Video Games

Recently, my wife wrote a powerful piece on how artificial intelligence threatens the video game industry. Her arguments stuck with me, especially when it comes to soundtracks. There is something irreplaceable about music composed by a person who understands the story, the characters, and the emotional beats of a game. A human composer breathes life into a virtual world in ways an algorithm simply cannot replicate.

Think about the iconic scores that define our favorite games. The haunting piano of "To the Moon," the orchestral swell of "Final Fantasy," the gritty synth of "Hotline Miami." These tracks were not generated by a machine crunching data. They came from artists who felt the weight of a scene, who experimented with instruments, who made mistakes and turned them into magic. A human-made soundtrack carries intention. Every note is a choice, not a probability.

AI-generated music might be efficient, but it lacks soul. It can mimic styles, but it cannot feel. It cannot know why a minor chord at a specific moment makes a player cry, or why a triumphant brass section after a hard boss fight feels earned. That understanding comes from lived experience, from the messy, beautiful process of creation.

As the industry rushes toward automation, we risk losing the very thing that makes games art. We should celebrate the composers who pour their hearts into every track. Their work is not just background noise. It is the heartbeat of the game. And no machine can replace that.
