It started with a movie tie-in that had no business being as good as it was. In 1997, Rare released "GoldenEye 007" for the Nintendo 64, a first-person shooter based on the James Bond film. The game was a surprise hit, selling millions and proving that console shooters could work without a mouse and keyboard. But its real legacy runs deeper than a single title.
During development, the team at Rare built a powerful internal engine for GoldenEye. That same engine later became the foundation for "Perfect Dark," a spiritual successor that pushed the N64 hardware to its limits. Perfect Dark is widely considered one of the best shooters of its generation, and it directly evolved from the tools and design lessons learned while making the Bond game.
But the influence did not stop there. A separate team at Valve, inspired by the tight level design and stealth mechanics of GoldenEye, used those ideas as a blueprint for their own project. That project became "Half-Life," which then led to "Counter-Strike" and the entire modern competitive shooter scene. Without GoldenEye's proof that console shooters could be deep and immersive, the industry might have looked very different.
So, while James Bond saved the world on screen, a video game tie-in quietly gave birth to two of the most influential franchises in gaming history: Perfect Dark and, indirectly, the entire lineage of shooters that followed. It is a strange, accidental legacy for a game that was almost canceled.
