MdR Symphony, SoCAL Chorale ‘Power Up’ with Video Game Music

This Saturday, the Marina del Rey Summer Symphony will join forces with the Southern California Chorale for a free outdoor concert that trades the usual classical repertoire for the iconic sounds of video games. The performance, set against the backdrop of the harbor with boats rocking in the evening breeze, aims to celebrate the artistry of video game scores from titles like "The Legend of Zelda," "Final Fantasy," and "Super Mario Bros."

Conductor Sarah Kim noted that video game music has evolved into a complex and emotional art form, deserving of the same orchestral treatment as traditional symphonies. The program will feature both sweeping orchestral movements and choral pieces, blending the symphony's full sound with the chorale's vocal harmonies. Organizers expect a large crowd, so attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and arrive early. The concert begins at sunset and will run for about two hours. No tickets are required, and the event is open to all ages.
