A new ranking has sparked debate among gamers by declaring that only three video games in history are better than Nintendo's landmark title, "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." The list, which has been circulating online, suggests that while "Breath of the Wild" redefined open-world exploration and player freedom, it still falls short of a very small handful of masterpieces.
The three games that reportedly outrank the 2017 classic are "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time," "Super Mario 64," and "Half-Life 2." Each of these titles is credited with fundamentally changing the video game landscape in its own era. "Ocarina of Time" set the standard for 3D action-adventure games, introducing lock-on targeting and a deep time-travel narrative. "Super Mario 64" essentially invented the modern 3D platformer, proving that analog stick controls and a fully explorable hub world could work. "Half-Life 2" pushed storytelling and physics-based gameplay to new heights, using the Source engine to create a seamless, cinematic experience.
Critics of the list argue that "Breath of the Wild" deserves a higher spot due to its sheer ambition and influence. The game abandoned traditional dungeon structures in favor of a physics-driven sandbox where players could solve puzzles in countless ways. Its sequel, "Tears of the Kingdom," doubled down on that philosophy. However, the ranking suggests that the three chosen titles had a more profound impact on the industry as a whole. For now, the debate continues over which game truly deserves the top spot on the podium.
