Saber CEO Explains AI Role in Upcoming Driving Game After Writer Controversy

Writers at Saber Interactive are using AI tools to generate driver-passenger dialogue for an experimental mode in the upcoming game Rideshare Stimulator, according to CEO Matt Karch. The human-authored script remains the core of the game, but the AI-assisted conversations are being edited by writers for the game's endless free-ride mode.

The clarification comes after a turbulent week of public accusations and heated exchanges. Former writer Stella Sacco claimed on social media that she was replaced by ChatGPT in late 2023, saying all passenger voices were AI-generated. Saber initially denied replacing any writers with AI, stating that the company's writing staff has tripled since 2023 and that the main story was written entirely by real people.

Karch explained that the AI dialogues are produced offline through prompts created by writers, then edited before being uploaded to the game. Each player experiences a given dialogue only once, with new rides generating fresh content. He noted the system is relatively cost efficient and does not involve players prompting AI directly.

The controversy escalated when Karch made personal remarks about Sacco in interviews, calling her replacement "more talented" and questioning her contributions. Sacco responded by calling his statements "remarkably pathetic" and suggesting they would damage Saber's reputation more than hers.

Valve requires AI disclosure for games using generative AI to create in-game content, though Saber's Steam page has not yet included this disclosure. A representative said one is forthcoming. The situation has sparked heated discussions on the game's Steam forums, with many users criticizing both the AI use and Karch's handling of the controversy.
