"Sucker for Love" is a game that should not work. It throws the cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft into a blender with the saccharine tropes of a visual novel dating simulator, and somehow the result is both hilarious and genuinely unsettling. Developer Akabaka recently sat down to discuss how this bizarre fusion came to be, and why tentacled entities from beyond the stars make surprisingly compelling love interests.
The core idea, according to Akabaka, started as a joke. The thought of trying to romance a shambling horror from the deep seemed like a perfect parody of both genres. But the more they worked on it, the more they realized there was real potential in the contrast. The game leans hard into the absurdity of the premise. Your character, a lonely protagonist, stumbles upon a book of eldritch rituals and accidentally summons a gothic, lovesick entity named Ln'eta. Instead of driving you mad, she just wants to go on a date.
Akabaka explained that the challenge was balancing the two tones. The game had to feel like a genuine Lovecraft story, with creepy rituals, forbidden knowledge, and a sense of dread. But it also had to be funny. The solution was to treat the horror elements with respect, while letting the dating sim mechanics undercut them. The rituals are real and dangerous, but the payoff is a shy, awkward monster girl who is just as confused about romance as you are.
The result is a game that pokes fun at both genres without being mean about it. It celebrates the weirdness of Lovecraft's creations while also laughing at the absurdity of trying to fit them into a dating sim format. For players looking for something that is equal parts spooky and silly, "Sucker for Love" delivers a surprisingly heartfelt story about finding connection in the most unlikely places.
