Capcom's return to form with Devil May Cry 5 still holds up as one of the most satisfying action games ever made. Nearly six years after its original release, the combat remains razor-sharp, the soundtrack still pumps adrenaline, and the sheer spectacle of Nero, Dante, and V tearing through demon hordes has not dulled. The game's core loop of chaining together stylish combos, switching weapons mid-air, and taunting enemies to build style rank is as addictive as it was on day one. For anyone who missed it the first time, there is no better time to jump in.
However, the recently released "Devil Hunter Edition" is a bit of a letdown. While the base game is a 10 out of 10, this new version feels more like a standard re-release than a definitive upgrade. The main draw is the inclusion of all previously released DLC, which is nice for newcomers, but for veterans who already own the game, there is very little reason to double dip. There are no new missions, no fresh weapons, and no substantial gameplay changes. The "Legendary Dark Knight" mode, which floods the screen with enemies, returns, but it is a mode that was already available on PC and later consoles.
The lack of a true next-gen overhaul is the biggest missed opportunity. While the game runs smoothly, the visual upgrade is minimal. There is no ray tracing, no significant texture overhaul, and the loading times, while improved, are not revolutionary. In a market where games like Resident Evil 4 Remake and Street Fighter 6 have set new visual standards for Capcom, this edition feels like a simple repackaging. It is a great game, but the "Devil Hunter Edition" is not special. It is just the same incredible game with a new sticker on the box.
