How Bloomfield College Helped Turn A Love Of Video Games Into A Law Career

For years, Ciara Donaldson spent her free time immersed in complex video game worlds, solving puzzles and navigating intricate storylines. What she did not realize was that those same skills were quietly preparing her for a career in law. Now a law student, Donaldson credits her time at Bloomfield College with helping her see the connection between gaming and legal reasoning.

At Bloomfield, Donaldson found professors who encouraged her to think critically about the systems and rules within games. She began analyzing how game mechanics create incentives, how virtual economies function, and how player disputes mirror real-world legal conflicts. One professor suggested she write a paper on the legal implications of in-game property rights. That assignment sparked her interest in intellectual property and contract law.

The college also offered a pre-law track that allowed Donaldson to take courses in logic, ethics, and argumentation. She learned to break down arguments the way she used to break down boss fights: by identifying patterns, anticipating moves, and finding weak points. Her gaming background gave her patience and persistence, traits that served her well in mock trial competitions.

Donaldson now attends law school with a focus on technology and gaming law. She hopes to advocate for fair policies in digital spaces. Looking back, she says the path from console to courtroom was not obvious at first. But Bloomfield College helped her see that passion for games could be more than a hobby. It could be the foundation for a serious career.
