The shift toward a fully digital gaming ecosystem is inevitable. Downloads have replaced discs, storefronts have replaced shelves, and the idea of inserting a cartridge into a console feels increasingly like a ritual from a bygone era. I am ready for that future. I welcome the convenience of instant access, the absence of scratched discs, and the ability to carry an entire library on a portable hard drive. But there is a catch. As physical media fades, publishers are quietly eroding the very concept of ownership.
When you buy a digital game, you are not buying a product. You are buying a license. That license can be revoked, altered, or made obsolete at the publisher's whim. Servers shut down. Stores close. Patches break compatibility. And suddenly, your library is a list of unplayable icons. That is not ownership. That is a rental with an uncertain expiration date.
The solution is not to cling to plastic discs and cardboard boxes. The solution is to demand that our digital purchases come with the same rights we enjoyed with physical media. We should be able to resell, trade, or transfer our licenses. We should be able to play our games offline without phoning home to a server. We should not lose access to a title we paid for just because a company decides to stop supporting it.
A digital-only future is coming. That is fine. But if publishers think they can take away our ownership rights along with the disc drive, they are wrong. The industry can have its convenience. It cannot have our control.
