Project Zomboid's Quiet Rise to Nine-Figure Success

Project Zomboid's Quiet Rise to Nine-Figure Success

The zombie survival game that refuses to die has quietly crossed a massive milestone. Project Zomboid, the isometric survival sim from developer The Indie Stone, has now grossed nine figures in revenue by being one of the deepest and most moddable games on the market.

GameDiscoverCo estimates the title has sold over 15 million units on Steam alone. Players are spending serious time in its world too, with a median playtime of more than 13 hours and an average exceeding 65 hours. The game regularly sits in Steam's Top 50 most-played titles by concurrent users.

This success didn't happen overnight. Project Zomboid has been on Steam since 2013, but its big breakout came in 2022 when it finally launched online multiplayer. That update sent sales spiking by 23 times. Since then, the game has only grown.

Creative director Will Porter, who has worked on the game for over 15 years, shared several reasons for the game's staying power. First, it's a sandbox that lets players customize everything. If someone doesn't like a feature, they can turn it off. The modding scene is also vital, with half the current development team coming from modding backgrounds.

The game attracts an oddly wide age range. Porter assumed it would appeal mostly to older players, but younger generations keep picking it up, streaming it, and playing with friends. Parents play with their kids. Husbands and wives survive together.

Project Zomboid is also highly watchable. The game's systems are easy to understand on screen. Fire spreads, flashlights die, cars run out of gas. Streamers can easily narrate over the action. The long progression system gives characters weight in the stories that emerge from playthroughs.

The price helps too. At just 20 dollars, Porter says the game is cheaper than it's worth. There are no microtransactions, no pay-to-win mechanics, and no spurious DLC.

Porter acknowledged that older Steam games like his benefit from slower discovery cycles and stronger community culture. He said if Project Zomboid launched today in a more crowded market, it might be a very different story.

The game's brutal learning curve is actually part of its appeal. Porter described Project Zomboid as a brick wall, but said players love colliding with it. The period of repeatedly dying and slowly gaining mastery is often remembered as the golden time with the game.

Build 42, a major update that has been in unstable beta for 18 months, is nearing full release. When it drops, expect another giant sales spike.
