11 Years Ago, CD Projekt Red Revolutionized Open-World RPG Video Games, Releasing 'The Witcher 3'

It has been 11 years since CD Projekt Red released a game that would redefine what an open-world RPG could be. "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" hit shelves in May 2015, and it did not just arrive as a good game. It moved the entire genre forward. Before this title, many open worlds felt like large, empty maps filled with repetitive tasks. The Witcher 3 changed that by packing its massive world with handcrafted stories, meaningful choices, and characters that felt real.

The game follows Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter searching for his adopted daughter across war-torn lands. But the real star was the world itself. Every village, swamp, and mountain had a story. Side quests were not simple fetch tasks. They were full narratives with moral weight, often more engaging than the main plot. The game also introduced a living ecosystem where weather and time of day affected gameplay. Its two massive expansions, "Hearts of Stone" and "Blood and Wine," added even more depth, with the latter offering a whole new region to explore.

Even today, many developers cite "The Witcher 3" as a benchmark. Its success proved that players wanted quality over quantity. It set a standard for narrative depth, world design, and player agency that few games have matched since. For many, it remains the gold standard of the open-world RPG.
