SAN FRANCISCO — Epic Games, the developer behind the blockbuster video game Fortnite, eliminated dozens of positions in the Bay Area last month, according to recent state regulatory filings. The job cuts, disclosed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice, mark the latest reduction in the company’s workforce following a broader restructuring effort announced earlier this year.
The layoffs affected employees at the company’s offices in the region, though specific numbers were not immediately detailed in the initial filing. In March, Epic Games had signaled plans to trim its global staff as part of a strategic shift to streamline operations and focus on core business areas. The company has faced mounting financial pressures in recent years, including legal battles with Apple and Google over app store policies, as well as fluctuating revenue from Fortnite.
Industry analysts note that the cuts reflect ongoing volatility in the gaming sector, where companies are reassessing headcounts amid shifting consumer habits and rising development costs. Epic Games has not publicly commented on the Bay Area reductions beyond the required state notification. Affected employees are expected to receive severance packages and transition support, according to the filing.
The layoffs add to a series of workforce reductions across the tech and gaming industries, as companies prioritize efficiency over rapid expansion. Epic Games continues to invest in its Unreal Engine technology and new game projects, but the Bay Area job losses underscore the challenging environment for even major industry players.
