Grand Theft Auto VI is set to launch on November 19, and for the first time in my years of covering games, I am not excited. I am tired just thinking about it. That date will mark the arrival of the most anticipated game of the decade, but for online journalists like me, it also signals the start of a very different kind of storm.
When the game hits shelves, it will not just be a release. It will be a battleground. Critics will rush to file their scores. Culture-war soldiers will pick apart every frame for political ammunition. Trolls will flood every comment section and social media feed with hot takes, bad faith arguments, and deliberate outrage. The noise will be deafening, and the actual game will get lost somewhere in the middle.
I have reviewed hundreds of titles over the years. I have survived launch weeks for blockbusters, broken games, and controversial sequels. But GTA VI feels different. Rockstar's games always attract a certain level of chaos, but this time the stakes are higher, the audience is bigger, and the online discourse is more fractured than ever. There is no way to win. If you praise the game, you are a shill. If you criticize it, you are a hater. If you try to stay neutral, you get ignored.
I will play it. I will review it. But I am not looking forward to the week that follows. November 19 is going to be exhausting, and I am already bracing for impact.
