Scopely, the mobile gaming giant behind Pokemon Go, has confirmed a restructuring of its Stumble Guys development team. The company described the move as a "reorganization" that impacted a "small number of employees." The news was first reported by mobile gaming industry sources, though Scopely has not disclosed the exact number of staff affected.
Stumble Guys, a popular multiplayer party game known for its chaotic obstacle courses and cartoonish visuals, has been a significant title for Scopely since it acquired the game's original developer, Kitka Games, in 2022. The game has maintained a strong player base on mobile devices and later expanded to PC via Steam. However, the reorganization suggests the company is shifting its internal priorities or streamlining operations for the title.
Scopely, which was acquired by Savvy Games Group in 2023 for $4.9 billion, has been expanding its portfolio aggressively. The company also manages other major live-service games like Monopoly Go and Marvel Strike Force. In a statement, a Scopely spokesperson said the reorganization is part of a normal business review to ensure the team is "best positioned for long-term success." The company added that it remains committed to supporting Stumble Guys and its community.
The layoffs come amid a broader trend of job cuts across the video game industry in 2024, with companies like Microsoft, Sony, and Riot Games also reducing their workforces. For Scopely, the move appears to be a targeted adjustment rather than a widespread reduction.
