Sony has announced that it will stop producing physical game discs for all new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028. After that date, new games will only be available through the PlayStation Store or at retailers in digital formats. The company confirmed that this change will not affect games that have already been released or those that launch before January 2028. Those titles will continue to be sold on disc as long as stock lasts.
The move marks a major shift for the gaming industry, where physical media has been slowly declining for years. Sony's decision aligns with a broader trend toward digital downloads and subscription services. Many players have already moved away from buying discs, preferring the convenience of downloading games directly to their consoles. However, the announcement has sparked debate among collectors and fans who value owning a physical copy. They argue that discs offer a sense of ownership and allow for resale or sharing, which digital purchases do not.
Sony has not yet detailed how it will handle backward compatibility for older disc-based games on future consoles. The company also did not comment on whether it plans to release special physical editions for collectors after the cutoff date. For now, the 2028 deadline gives developers and retailers several years to adjust. It also gives players time to decide whether to embrace a fully digital future or hold onto their disc collections.
