Ubisoft Anvil Engine talks about using AI in game development: "It makes total sense"

July 4, 2026 - 05:21

Ubisoft Anvil Engine talks about using AI in game development:

The team behind Ubisoft's proprietary Anvil engine has weighed in on the growing use of artificial intelligence in game development, offering a nuanced take on the technology's role. Nicolas Lopez, a technical director on the engine, stated that integrating AI into the production pipeline "makes total sense," particularly when it comes to improving graphical fidelity and streamlining repetitive tasks.

Lopez explained that AI tools are already proving invaluable for generating high-quality textures, populating vast open worlds with believable foliage, and enhancing lighting simulations. These are areas where the technology can handle massive computational loads far faster than a human artist. However, he was quick to acknowledge the limits of the current generation of AI. For areas that require more creative nuance or narrative logic, Lopez conceded that "it's a bit less natural." He pointed to complex character animations, dialogue systems, and dynamic storytelling as fields where AI still struggles to match the intuition of a human developer.

The comments come as the broader gaming industry debates the balance between automation and artistic integrity. While some fear AI could replace jobs, Lopez framed it as a collaborative tool that frees developers from drudgery, allowing them to focus on the "magic" that makes games compelling. For now, the Anvil team sees AI as a powerful assistant, not a replacement.
